Childhood
Kids that grew up in the circus probably had an easier time finding a routine. My family and specifically my parents have always been the type to move around and get odd jobs to "keep us on the road." They always told me that was what made our family special. The ability to move around and see the world instead of being stuck in a single town forever. As early as I can remember until I started questioning them at around 14 my mother and father always claimed that we were amazing nobles on a mission to meet as many individuals and learn as much about this land as we can. To one day go back to our country and live the life of nobles.
The Summer of Ghouls and Pools (Age 11)
The Summer of 2001 was both one of the best and worst summers of my whole life. It was one of the only times when my parents had found a cheap home to rent in Glenwood Springs, CO. Next door were a few other kids local to the neighborhood. My parents insisted that while they were out in the town working that I was to go make some friends and not just sit inside all day reading the new comics I got from Aunt Lyra when we last visited. During some of the first few weeks of the summer I was sitting outside reading Ultimate Spider-Man #1 when a few of the kids passed by on their bikes and asked if I wanted to join them to go get some ice cream since they hadn't seen me before. I thought of the words my father always told me "be nice to others you never know what you can get." I agreed to go with them and grabbed my bike. This ended up being one of the most fun days in my life.
From that day on through the summer the group hung out Max as our kind of leader who always got us doing the best things, Anri always talking about the different ghouls that her mother mentioned, Elvira brightening up the whole room and me trying to keep us out of trouble so the summer would never end. Through this summer we spent the days hanging out at my house without my parents ever around, biking across the small town across the massive river, walking across the railroad tracks, sneaking into the local pools and talking about writing the best comic in the world. A comic about all our adventures we had as Max as the inspiration for our main character who would solve and fight the paranormal all across the world.
One day later in the summer around August, Anri mentioned a graveyard where she knew that the ghost of Doc Holliday could be summoned. As she set up her items that she took from her mother around the grave at night the air seemed to get colder. As we sat in that circle with Anri doing her chant a noise was heard from the nearby brush. Max being the strongest of us decided to go take a look to make sure no one was hurt or if there was an animal that needed help. The candles flickered through the rising wind until a few of them went out as a snap from the brush near Max and with a yelp he was gone. We searched the area for hours never finding him. Until the next morning when on the radio we heard that a young boy was found dead in the mountains.
My parents quickly started talking about finding a new job in a nearby town that I could start school in. Before leaving I was able to leave behind my Ultimate Spider-Man #1 with Elvira since she always was staring at the pictures. Though I couldn't really look at her, being too sad having to leave yet another group of friends behind. Maybe one day I will get it back but if not I'm glad I could give her something that brought joy into both our lives before and after one of the worst days of them. We left not long after as we drove out from the town of Glenwood Springs the radio blared with a national alarm. The towers were hit.
The Time After Max
The towns and schools that we stayed in after the summer of 2001 never lasted for long. It seemed that my parents had taken to working on the road more again and refused to settle down in one spot for too long. Always claiming "the next big catch is out there" with a sparkle in my fathers eyes. But to me there would never be as big "of a catch" as the bond I made with those other three. A feeling since than has always nagged at the back of my mind, that if I was quicker at responding instead of sitting there thinking of all the possibilities it could be, I could have saved Max that night.
We spent the next three years traveling across the whole west coast. From New Mexico where my parents sold high end jewelry up to Oregon to sell herbal remedies and natural pills to those in need. When you spend 14 years on the road and don't have anyone to actually ask questions of its easy to believe the people that are always there. I sometimes worked with them constantly trying to keep my mind off that summer and having stopped reading comics since they were almost impossible to get and we hadn't gone to visit my Aunt and Uncle in a long time.
Until the probably 100th breakdown of the shitty Vista Cruiser, where we spent many of our nights sleeping, riding from town to town. On the edge of the highway running along the Pacific Coast was when I couldn't help but ask. "When are we we going to get help or be able to stay in one place for a long time," I asked yawning as the sun rose above the crashing Ocean. And thus the lie continued, they told me that they had just gotten word that day they were being sent on another mission for a longer time in Loveland, Colorado only a few 3 hours away from an Aunt and Uncle of mine. The first time we stayed in a spot since Glenwood and the summer with Max, Anri and Elvira.
The next four years never made that small apartment feel like a real home. My parents almost never staying there or coming home late at night having just swindled some people out of their hard earned money from a real job. Though I knew my parents were lying it was never something I brought up. They were doing it to support me and be able to keep an actual roof over our heads. (these are more lies he now believes form his parents, they are just con artists). A stability that was there but felt like it was hanging on by a few pillars.
College - First Year
Though accepted into this prestigious private academy was somewhat of a shock this was my first chance to be able to make it on my own outside of the chaotic watch of my parents. My Aunt and Uncle were kind of enough to let me stay in their spare apartment above their book and coffee shop. Which meant I was able to bring my adorable white chat Flauna with me to college and didn't have to worry about leaving her at "home".
The first bit of school was tough. Even though I had gotten used to living in one place back in Loveland and used to living on my own it was hard to leave the comfort of the bookstore and go to Telloglou for classes. After about the first month of not really getting to know anyone, out of fear that I would lead them down a bad road, I ran into a face I hadn't seen in almost a decade. Though she was older and now had green hair the way that Anri talked about the world beyond our own was indistinguishable to anyone else.
From there she convinced me to join her club with a few others that would hunt and talk all things occult. For awhile it was hard to go and listen to their ramblings about things that couldn't exist when real people were harming real people. But after some time I took it like I was reading a comic again, after all these years, watching a world unfold right in front of me. I allowed them to come hangout at my Aunt and Uncles Bookstore and they showed me the Diner that all kids hung out at, The Neon Nook.
Through the first year went well I mainly kept to myself only making only one true friend in Anri, again. I was able to keep decent grades but kept messing up in class. My Aunt and Uncle continue to make sure that I stayed on course and not doing anything too crazy. I joined the chess club and the book club where I have gotten to talk about some amazing work. It is very nice to be in a spot that isn't as chaotic. I hope that I don't ruin that.
The First Summer In Thorncross
While the first year went by in a breeze of meeting some new classmates and working hard on my studies the summer came just as quick. My Aunt and Uncle allowed me to start a part-time job at their bookstore helping out customers on days that they weren't in or needed the extra hand. It was a quiet and relatively uneventful summer in the small town of Thorncross. I spent most of the time that I had free just reading and getting texts from Anri about her mothers book tour and all the cryptids that she got the chance to read about. I have gotten used to living on my own and keeping myself entertained so not having anyone around in the summer didn't really affect me. Though I do wish that some of the weird Occult club stayed behind for this summer so I could have had someone to hangout with. It will be nice to get back to school and have everyone back. It was very strange not moving finally this summer like I did so many times before when things always seemed to be settling down my parents would either move us to a new town or find some way to shake up the life we were starting.
I can't wait for summer to be done.
